Pros: Fox Magic Audio Recorder records sounds as MP3/ WAV files. It is able to use various audio devices/audio inputs for recording. The devices can be mono/stereo mixer, SPDIF input, Aux, CD player or Line in inputs or directly from a Mic. It could even be from a phone line.
File names can be set automatically or manually. Default directory is the My Documents folder. In the automatic mode a sequential number is incremented and tagged onto the file name. Several parameters can be set to decide the quality of the recorded file. Bits per sample could be set for 8 or 16 bits, sampling frequency can be set from 8 KHz per second or 11/22/44.1 KHz per second. The compression works at CBR or the constant bit rate or the variable bit rate methods. The trade off is that with VBR the file size could grow for complex passages as higher rates of bits are used at those sections. With CBR it is always at a single bit rate. While recording the start, stop or the pause buttons could be used to control the recording. The timer control also can be used to control the recording. Recorded files could be previewed in the internal player.
Cons: Timer feature is not very useful. Audio recordings are never perfect. Thus without some kind of editing facility it is too simplistic an approach. At a minimum, some cut, paste kind of editing would have been useful.
Overall this application rates 2 stars.
